Has the PR for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games worked? New survey suggests most Brits don’t know the opening ceremony is tonight

While organisers are eager to play down comparisons with the London 2012 Olympics, tonight’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Glasgow is expected to be world class, bringing in an international audience of over a billion.

Yet, according to a new micro survey polled by PR agency PHA Media, most Brits are not even aware that the opening ceremony is tonight.

The survey, which was posted on Survey Monkey yesterday as the media build up to the games intensified, simply asked the question “Did you know the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games opening ceremony is on Wednesday at 8pm?”

According to the results only 38.46 per cent of recipients were aware the opening ceremony is tonight, compared to 61.54 per cent who were unaware.

On a more positive note the survey also asked “Did you know the Commonwealth Games were starting this week?”, which had a much healthier response with 73.08 per cent of recipients saying they did.

Despite this these figures do raise questions about the reach of PR activity in the build up to the games. This time last year Chris Hoy marked the one-year mile stone to the Games with ‘a day of celebration’ in Glasgow city center featuring dancers, musicians and street performers. There have also been advertising campaigns and notable international events such as the Queen’s baton rely featuring 71 countries. But has it made an impact?

On the surface the answer would seem to be ‘yes’, especially if the staggering viewing figures for tonight’s launch event come to fruition. The Scottish public have also been gearing up for the Games for months, with the media full of stories (positive and negative) and Games ‘survival guides’ appearing all over the net. But whether the event has really captured the interest of the entire British public remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure, after the depressing few months England have had in the football, rugby, cycling and now cricket, success in these Games could save our sporting summer.
