Promoted Pins…

Today, Pinterest has announced that they are going to start experimenting with promoting certain pins from a select group of businesses.

They have promised not to annoy users with the trial by spamming feeds with promotional banners, instead the promoted pins will be:

  • Tasteful – No flashy banners or pop-up ads.
  • Transparent – they’ll always let us know if someone paid for what we see, or where we see it.
  • Relevant – These pins will be about stuff we’re actually interested in, like a delicious recipe, or an item of clothing.
  • Improved based on feedback – they have asked users to keep letting them know what we think, so they can improve on making things better.

To begin their testing, they are going to promote a few pins in search results and category feeds. For example, a pin for a Darth Vader outfit from a costume shop might be promoted in a search for “Halloween”.

They’ve assured us that nobody is paying for anything yet – they want to see how things go…

In PHA Digital’s opinion, we’re quite excited by the announcement. Pinterest might finally be able to make some money, which will really move on the platform in this forever-changing digital space. It’s already doing well – ComScore announced back in July that 46.2 million people in the U.S. are using the site on their desktop and mobile.

Definitely one to watch!
