Last month PHA Media had the privilege of announcing that client, British yachtsman Alex Thomson, had broken the transatlantic world sailing record.
An achievement of epic proportions, Thomson sailed single-handedly from New York to Lizard Point just off Falmouth in Cornwall, taking more than 24 hours off the existing record, which was set 10 years ago.
Setting a new world record at 8 days, 22 hours and 8 minutes, Thomson covered 2,800 nautical miles on board the 60ft Hugo Boss yacht – the very same boat that will become his home for three months later this year, when he embarks upon one of the greatest challenges in the world of sport, the Vendee Globe.
Beginning and ending in Les Sables-d’Olonne in France, the Vendee Globe stretches some 22,000 miles, testing both the physical capabilities and mental strength of competitors. The only single-handed non-stop round-the-world race, the Vendee Globe has, to date, been dominated in its entirety by the French.
This year, Thomson has his sights on becoming the first Briton ever to claim the title.
With only 50% of sailors who enter the race successfully reaching the finish line, the Vendee Globe has rightfully made its name as ‘The Everest of Sailing’.
For Alex this is the challenge of a lifetime; for PHA, this is a hugely exciting adventure to be a part of.
Bring on the Vendee!
