Qatar World Cup 2022

  • Qatar World Cup 2022

Background

Qatar’s winning bid for the 2022 World Cup was hit by controversy immediately FIFA’s decision to award the tournament to the emirate state at the end of 2010.

While the situation has now developed further, the initial crisis partly centred on criticisms over the decision due to the Qatar climate and infrastructure – the smallest country ever to be awarded a World Cup and the first time a Middle Eastern country was bestowed with the honour.

Brief

In 2011, we were called in to advise the global reputation of the Qatar World Cup 2022 and bid committee on a project-basis.

Our role was to tell the other side of the story, to convey positive messages around the World Cup in order to counter negativity, and give media and football fans across the world a clear picture on the bid and plans for the tournament.

Strategy

We delivered detailed briefings to journalists across the globe to present the Bid Committee’s views on why it was right to award it World Cup 2022.

We also travelled to Qatar to arrange and oversee interviews to be given by Hassan al-Thawadi, the Secretary General of the Qatar 2022 bid committee, who was fully prepared for the media by PHA Media.

Resolution

During the initial burst of controversy, PHA was able to provide balance to stories and also make sure journalists had the facts they needed to take an educated view.

We also arranged high profile coverage through key interviews on BBC’s Newsnight and on the BBC Sport website in order for the leading members of the Bid Committee to convey their standpoint.

Positive coverage was also achieved in the Guardian newspaper following an interview with Hassan al Thawadi.

These components led to positive worldwide coverage – via the internet, broadcast and printed publications. This coverage quickly and effectively spread key messages across the globe as vital detail was picked up by journalists internationally before PHA’s brief came to a close.

Thank you for doing an outstanding job when the whole world was watching our every move

Hassan al-Thawadi, Secretary General, Qatar 2022 Organising Committee.
